Life in a Tide Pool - Crabs and Lobsters

Crabs are very fun to watch in tide pools. They scurry around at the first site of danger and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The two most common crabs in tide pools are the Stripped Shore Crab and the Hermit Crab. Crabs and Lobsters are crustaceans and have to shed their outer shells periodically. The discarded shells are called molts. Many tide pool visitors will find these molts and mistake them for dead animals. Hermit crabs also shed their shells but also use the shells of other animals as their homes. On this episode of Life in a Tide Pool, follow the host and local experts to find out why hermit crabs can only live where there are numerous snails. Visit a local aquarium to learn why kelp crabs can change color and why. Also visit a local seafood processing facility to see how lobsters are harvested and learn all about the lobster industry. More information about crabs and lobsters can be found at our website at: http://www.lifeinatidepool.com/crabs-and-lobsters/ and our California tide pools website at: http://californiatidepools.com/crabs-and-lobsters/
