What is the difference between urban and rural areas in terms of heart attacks? Time, and because of this South Dakota had to come up with a system of care to that fit into their environment and improved survivability from heart attacks. In a place where there are 824,000 people and 77,000 square miles, south Dakota has some challenges when it comes to providing timely and adequate care for STEMI patients. Luckily the American Heart Association was granted 8.4 million dollars from the Helmsley Charitable Trust to improve the STEMI System of Care in a rural state where 100% of the transporting agencies are now transmitting 12 Leads. 80% of those agencies are volunteer basic life support ambulances.

STEMI Survivor, Forrest Stanton, takes us through the experience as his story shows the importance of how timely acquisition and transmission of the prehospital 12-lead ECG can dramatically change outcomes in patient care.
