Fran and Jessica are neighbours and best friends. The only dark cloud in the friendship is their husbands: Fran is Brick’s trophy wife, so she has to be at his beck-and-call, while Jessica’s husband Mal is a heavy drinker and aggressive. Then there is the baby question. Husband Brick wants babies, but Fran doesn’t while her friend Jessica wants babies, but her husband Mal doesn’t. This creates some cross-marriage tensions. Then Mal tells Jessica they are selling the house and moving away. This is devastating news to the two friends.
As Jessica relates the story, it is Fran who first comes to the conclusion that their husbands must go - violently. Divorce is out of the question, too uncertain, while the insurance would help them start new lives. As a first plan they attempt to hire a "professional" at a roadside tavern where "rough" types are supposed to hang out, a place that Jessica heard Brick talking about at a recent barbecue party. Fran and Jessica meet up with Wes, a hitman, who gives the women a pep talk about murder and a word of advice: “Successful killers do it themselves." Which is what they decide to do.
