Clotheslines is a poetic documentary featuring clothes on the line as emblematic of the unseen work of women. This film, completed in 1982, has risen to the status of a classic historical document. Through voice-over accounts of women, it examines the pain, loneliness, isolation, and drudgery of doing laundry at the same time that it reveals the wisdom, humor, and folklore embedded in this household task. In recent years, the film has been seen as "an ambassador for the planet" with appeals to use dryers less and use clotheslines more for the sake of saving energy. There have also been initiatives to remove the ban on clotheslines in homeowner associations and condominium communities....for the same reason.
